Welcome to the whimsical world of the Cheshire Cat. He is the only character in Wonderland who actually listens to Alice. With his remarks, he helps Alice understand how things work in this strange place. It is not entirely clear why Carroll named him ‘Cheshire Cat’, but it is likely that it originated from a painter in Cheshire, England who painted grinning lions for pubs around the area. Most people know his most famous line: “We are all mad here!”
“Curiouser and curiouser!” cried Alice (she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English); “now I’m opening out like the largest telescope that ever was! Good-bye, feet!” (for when she looked down at her feet, they seemed to be almost out of sight, they were getting so far off).
